5 Minutes With… SAAL

Pulling together Eastern and Western influences, SAAL is an artist that needs not only to be seen or heard, but experienced. Welcoming her roots into her music with open arms, the evidence of her eclectic background is crystal clear.

Since moving to London, SAAL has set up her own recording studio, allowing her to record, produce and her own vocals and enabling collaborations with a host of electronic producers. Compared by the industry to Hybrid Soundsystem, Kate Bush and PJ Harvey; SAAL combines styles, breaks genres and experiments with her sweeping vocal range to make music that is nothing short of hypnotic.

We caught up with SAAL ahead of the release of her new single “Signs” to find out a little bit more about her.

Hi SAAL, how are you and what are you up to today?

I’ve just finished recording the final vocals for the debut single “Signs” so I’m producing them up now.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

It’s an electronic mix of bass music with a bit of drum & bass…

What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?

I choose Noise HybridAnother LanguageThis Will Destroy YouWider AngleHybridWild Light65 Days of StaticFour-Calendar CaféCocteau Twins.

Are there any other artists that you’re particularly into at the moment?

Matt Lange. I love his production.

Can you let us in on some of the key pieces of gear you use to create tracks?

My brain, Logic, my mac, a studio mic and a good set of speakers.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?

I can still feel the adrenaline from my gig at Cargo last weekend! Great crowd, fantastic sound, all in all perfect.

What’s the worst gig you have ever done and why?

Haven’t had a bad gig to date yet but there were some technical issues when I last played at the 229 [The venue] so that was probably my least favourite gig…

Do you have any releases or collaborations coming up?

My debut single “Signs” will be out soon and the video will be ready next week!

Check out the teaser below.
