INTERVIEW: Five Minutes With … Rad Cat

Rising talent Rad Cat has released “without u”, the latest single from UNTITLED, his self-produced EP which is set to be released on 20th July.

Having already received support from tastemaker publications such as COMPLEX, Run The Trap and Clash, and racking  up over 1,5 million Youtube views, it’s no surprise that the young DJ has production credits for artists such as Blackbear, Kevin Gates, Travis Mills and Mike Posner, on his list of achievements.

We caught up with him to for a chat, ahead of his EP release.

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?

Hi, I’m doing great! I’m just sitting here in this 90 degree heat drinking a smoothie.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

Ah this question is always a bit tough for me to answer. Imagine if R&B and upbeat House music had a child together. I suppose that’s how I describe it.

What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?

Mura Masa: Soundtrack to a Death
Flume: Skin
Porter Robinson: Worlds
Blackbear: The Afterglow
Alina Baraz & Galimatias: Urban Floral

What other artists do you really like at the moment and why?

FKJ is a recent favorite. The music is so chill and relaxed, I love it. I also love listening to indie bands like Phoenix.

If we gave you the budget to put a line-up together for a mini fest, who would you book and where would you play?

I would book Flume, Blackbear, myself, Jai Wolf, Smash Mouth, Blink 182, & Pitbull b2b Enrique Iglesias.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?

I would probably be designing clothes.

Do you enjoy playing to an audience or working in the studio?

I enjoy both, but I think I prefer playing to an audience a little bit more. It’s more exciting and I love the rush.

What are some of the key pieces of gear you use to write your tracks in the studio? Or do you prefer to use software and plug ins?

I don’t use physical gear, it’s pointless for me, as I do everything using plugins inside of ableton. My fave plugin right now has to be Serum. I used to use Massive a lot, but Serum is a next level synth.

What are your thoughts on the following genres?

Drum n Bass?

Not sure how I feel about it.  All I know is that it’s too fast and there are too many breakbeats going on.

Deep House?

YES. My dream is to drop a 12 hour deep house set.

Trap?

Trap is hype and I love it.

Classical?

Eh… It’s not my thing but I can see why people can appreciate it.

Braindance?

What even is this? Lol.

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects, DJ mixes or collaborations in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

My first EP comes out in July and I’m super excited for it! More stuff is happening this summer as well so just stay tuned 🙂
