Russia has been at the forefront recently with regards to deep atmospheric cuts. A plethora of emerging artists are bursting on to the scene, each with their own unique take on the ever-growing deep electronic music scene. Moscow producer KOSIKK, is no exception as he premieres his elegant new track ‘Remain‘ via The Playground.
Starting more than a decade ago, the Russian producer decided to experiment with his sound from 2013; turning toward deep atmospheric melodies. Soon after, electronic music publications started picking up on his creations, whereafter he found his music being featured in podcasts and radio stations across the world. Opting to stay completely anonymous, KOSIKK finds himself inspired by the outside world and the emotions he experiences. The project was marked by a significant number of collaborations with well-known producers such as Subsets, Axel Thesleff, Twisted Psykie, blΔnc, JacM, Unworldly, Vinich, and Loner.
‘Remain‘, his brand new track which premiered via The Playground, is an ethereal undertaking into deep-seated emotions within the psyche. Mysterious and soothing, it still manages to be tinged with a sense of sadness.
We sat down with Kosikk and spoke about his brand new track ‘Remain’, why he chooses to remain anonymous, and how listeners motivate him
To anyone not familiar with your textured soundscapes, how would you describe your sound?
I honestly can’t tell you how to describe my sound… I try to do what I like and set the atmosphere so that you can imagine something listening.
How did you first get into making music?
I was fond of playing the guitar, so there is a presentation of harmony and notes, then a friend saw the FL Studio sequencer, (the first steps were more like a game). It’s like a whole world opened up to me; I couldn’t believe that you can write orchestral parts on a computer.
You just premiered a brand new track via The Playground. What can you tell us about ‘Remain’?
‘Remain’ is quite a specific piece of work, but in all honesty, it’s probably filled to the brim with a sense of sadness. There is always sadness in my tracks, even though it may seem a bit strange to some people.
You choose to remain anonymous and let the music speak for itself. Why did you decide to do this?
Yes, as long as I want to remain anonymous, I want the music to speak for me. Recently there have been a lot of proposals for performances, and I’m still thinking whether or not I should do it. If I do decide to do it, then I might share a bit more about me. 😉
Is there something about the Russian music scene you want the world to know about?
The Russian scene has made huge leaps in developing their sound. I believe that we’ve always had many talented artists and it’s only being seen now. I also respect the Western artists (and listeners), especially England as it has always been a mecca of art and new ideas.
Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?
The way I write music is with repetition. It’s a process that continues on its own. Either I turn out an idea in a couple of minutes, or absolutely nothing happens. It all depends on my mood, what’s happening in the world around the relationships I have with people, etc.
When I write a track, I am inspired by the world around me, by my mood. It’s hard to know how a particular track will turn out; it all kind of happens by itself, so to speak. it all comes by itself, so to speak.
Any new or upcoming artists on your radar? Who shouldn’t the world sleep on?
I do not know… I am a music lover, first and foremost. I can listen to different styles, trends and genres. Like it or not, music is very complex. I would not want to single out any artists, I’m afraid to offend my peers in the event I forget to mention someone!
Do you have any inspiration outside of your genre?
I do music in my spare time, so whenever I have time, I sit down and try to write something, so because of that it’s hard to really plan a track. I’m a strange artist, probably not like everyone else. I’m just trying to write what I like and see how the listeners will respond as I love reading their comments. The warm comments from the listeners please me because it helps me know that I am not wasting my time. It makes me feel like I am leaving my little mark on history.
