The outstanding Maya Jane Coles has released her remix of Australian indie-electronic quintet Gold Fields’ wonderfully infectious track ‘Cocoon’. Her thumping rework was premiered by Mix Mag on the 19th of June ahead of its release today, June 21st, via Haven Sounds. Making full use of the melodic vocals laid down by Gold Fields, Maya Jane Coles spreads the eerie lyricism over dark, atmospheric deep-house. With an added sense of urgency, she neatly and coherently moves ‘Cocoon’ from a light shimmering indie offering to a thrilling night-time club journey.
Maya Jane Coles is absolutely no stranger to the spotlight. The British-Japanese producer and DJ has received support from a host of BBC presenters and shows such as MaryAnne Hobbs, Danny Howard, Radio 1’s Power Down Playlist With Annie Mac, Britain’s Next Make-Up Star, Annie Nightingale, Pete Tong, Nemone, Tom Ravenscroft, and Steve Lamacq. Her talents have also been highlighted by multiple publications including Mixmag, Pitchfork, Billboard, Boiler Room, Rolling Stone, The Fader, Complex, XLR8R, FACT, Resident Advisor.
“Really enjoyed working on this track!” said Maya Jane Coles on her involvement. “It turned into something very different to everything else I’ve done in the remix department, but super happy with the outcome.”
The original track appears on Gold Fields’ latest album Dalawa, released April 12, a release that sees the outfit delve deep into groovy psychedelia to great effect. Produced by Malcolm Besley (Northeast Party House, City Calm Down) and mixed by Tony Espie (The Avalanches, Cut Copy, Architecture in Helsinki) Dalawa is Gold Fields’ first album after a six-year hiatus, being released to critical acclaim.
