London’s Mall Grab is an interesting creature. Perhaps more so than his peers, he’s always been quite genre-fluid. Morphing through various styles of house, techno, and EBM, Mall Grab hasn’t settled on one thing too long before he’s on to the next. His past few releases have shown a slight penchant for hard hitting, big room techno. On January’s WHO ASKED YOU this seemed to reach its peak, with an acidic two track EP influenced by retro tinged techno bangers. But peeking through the spaces between the pounding four on the floors was a hint toward his next fixation; the breakbeat.

The ever so slight suggestion of a breakbeat can now, in retrospect, definitely be felt on WHO ASKED YOU. Which brings us here, to Metaphysical, and Mall Grab’s first real dalliance with drum n bass style breaks. You can practically hear him screaming “AMEN!” These breaks bookend and accent what is otherwise a 90’s rave track, complete with whirring, racing synths and an aggressively spoken one-word riff. The Amen break floats in and out between pounding hardstyle and Mall Grab bass signatures, making for an endearing love letter to Mall Grab’s influences and the dance music history of his hometown London.
