While the current world can appear devoid of magic at a first glance, it’s artists like Olovson who are bringing a sense of adventure back into music one finely chosen piano note at a time. The neo-classical producer’s debut solo album Storytelling brings out the Peter Pan within us all. First on both the radar and the album, we’re introduced to ‘Books Are Flying’ which marked Olovson’s launch of the new project as he ventured away from his traditional electronic roots and began to show his talents as a pianist and composer. ‘Gyroscope’ follows closely, stretching its legs as the world begins to notice the music of Olovson. The video, animated by Gabriel Böhmer, has been selected as one of the included in the official selections for both Encounters Film Festivals, the London International Film Festival and the London Short Film Festival, all of which are BAFTA qualifying festivals. Olovson also celebrated the release of the album by sharing a live video of himself performing the single with the official video superimposed onto a screen in front of him which you can catch here.
Other singles have also stood out on the Storytelling album including ‘Paloma Blanca’ which was paired with a carefully crafted video from the renowned artist María Medem as well as the video for ‘Epilogue’ which ventures into the abstract as we’re introduced to the almighty sorcerer pulling the strings. Created by French award-winning artist Anna Budanova, the video for ‘Epilogue’ begs the listener to step back to the beginning of the album to retake the journey with newfound knowledge.
However, we would be doing you a disservice if we didn’t point out the previously unheard tracks that have shyly revealed themselves. Light and cheerful, ‘En Mi Lado’ is like that trustworthy friend or partner who is there to supply a quick smile, word of encouragement and optimism for the future. ‘Ruth’ opens with slightly more jazzy notes and we’re introduced to a delicate dance: back and forth with a grace that calls to mind the likes of a tango meeting the ballet. ‘Leaving Home’ is that final pull of adventure into the unknown as we take carefully measured and yet determined steps forward, over the hills and into the land beyond.
Speaking of the album, Olovson tells us: “This is my first solo album and it is such a wonderful feeling to finally put it out. I have composed, played, lived and breathed these compositions for the past two years and it feels great to finally share them with everyone. I wish this album brings peace to people’s lives and ignites their imagination.”
