Harvey Sutherland, Dam Funk – Feeling Of Love
After the release of his sweaty single Jouissance last year, a delicious mix of analog synth and motorik beats, neo-funk artist Harvey Sutherland is going back to the roots of his style with one of the most iconic masters in funk, Dam Funk himself. Feeling Of Love is pure old school funk, with a measure of modern production and synths for good measure. Groovy, acidy and full of buoyant joy, Feeling Of Love is a meeting of the titans that delivers on the goods.
Disclosure, RAYE – Waterfall
Continuing their recent re-entry into their earlier UKG and breakbeat style, Disclosure take their rediscovered sonic template toward their more recent pop radio exploits. Teaming up with RAYE, Waterfall blends their 90’s garage roots with the deep house, bassy electropop that made them household names. Smooth, lush, and stylish as hell, Waterfall is prime Disclosure and the beginning of their reconciliation of the past and present toward their future.
Robyn, Nehneh Cherry, Mapei – Buffalo Stance
Swedish singer and rapper Nehneh Cherry is updating her catalogue, only she’s handing it to a fellow Swedish queen to take the reins. A reimagining of Cherry’s 1988 hit Buffalo Stance, Robyn takes the new jack swing soul of the track but updates it toward a more careful, sensual energy with touches of post-punk guitar accents and a kicking half-time beat. With Mapei handling Cherry’s bars with fierce braggadocio, Robyn injects her unparalleled emotional gravitas to the chorus, turning Buffalo Swing into a mid-tempo R&B love jam.
Chase Icon – Call Your Mom
Internet sensation Chase Icon is one of the current guard of social media stars who’ve actually been putting out pretty decent music. Her irreverent, party-ready dance pop has filtered her SoCal Barbie doll energy into sinfully delicious guilty pleasures. On Call Your Mom, she repeats the formula with a bassy, grimey, techno beat behind her. But it’s Icon’s lyrics that are the true superstar. Tongue in cheek, dripping with sass, who can argue with the matter of fact statement of “Imma call your mom and tell that bitch exactly what’s going on.”
Channel Tres – Acid In My Blood
Channel Tres is one of the most exciting voices to emerge from the current wave of house music artists, in the ilk of Kaytranada but more club focussed. Acid In My Blood is, tellingly, an acid house banger with touches of tech. Simultaneously laidback and propulsive as hell, Acid In My Blood is incredibly cool. Opening with the fierce declaration of “don’t tell me this isn’t black music,” Channel Tres makes his mission clear: reclamation. And we are so here for it.
