When Canadian record producer Kaytranada walked away with the Grammy for Best Dance / Electronic Album in 2021, it felt like the beginning of a process of reclamation that would see house and dance music return to the hands of its Black pioneers. To this, Kaytranada is essential. His music is not so much ‘house’ per se as it is more in line with the genre bending experiments of Nicolás Jaar, but it comes rather definitively from Black history and culture. On his latest single Twin Flame, he ropes in fellow visionary and collaborator Anderson .Paak on a house track that oozes through hip-hop, R&B, and soul.

Twin Flame builds itself around a looped piano refrain, which against a steady four on the floor sounds enormously epic. The track surges into a soulful funk groove, with .Paak offering rapped verses across Kaytranada’s groove inflected soundscape. The synergy between the two artists is palpable and possibly the most joyous thing about Twin Flame. .Paak and Kaytranada feel intrinsic as a duo, and leave us wanting more from the possibility of a long term creative partnership.
