A lot has changed since Gorillaz first arrived on the scene. For starters, their pioneering virtual act has shifted in the age of VR and NFTs, its impact potentially lost on a new generation who lives life partly through a screen. But the band has always avoided lapsing into a gimmick by virtue of one fact: really good music. As much a social experiment as a creative one, their ever rotating roster of collaborators have been some of music’s most visionary icons, and their latest single New Gold is no exception.

The second single of their upcoming new album Cracker Island, New Gold sees Damon Albarn, 2D, and the gang team up with Tame Impala and rapper Bootie Brown to deliver a track that ushers in a new era informed by smooth-as-butter funk and disco. Opening with Moroder style synths, New Gold oozes through a chorus drawled by Kevin Parker into icy cool verses by Brown, backed by a robust four on the floor and psychedelic synth flourishes. It’s a new direction but also familiar to the band in its inherent trendiness, maintaining what has always been true of them: they’re really, really cool.
