Eliza Rose has become the first female DJ to score a number 1 record on the UK Singles Chart in the past 20 years. Her song, B.O.T.A (Baddest Of Them All), has beat out former reigning chart topper LF System’s Afraid To Feel and the new Britney Spears and Elton John collaboration, Hold Me Closer, for the top spot. The last female DJ to achieve this was Sonique, whose iconic It Feels So Good scored the top spot in 2002.
Released in June, the Interplanetary Criminal produced track has slowly gained momentum, officially entering the charts three weeks ago at #96 before quickly jumping to the top while surpassing the likes of Beyonce and David Guetta. Much of the song’s chart success is attributed to its viral popularity on TikTok, where it has soundtracked over 120 thousand clips of everything from car demolitions to insomniac grandmas.
Speaking on the significance of the song’s achievement for women in electronic music, Rose told Mixmag, “Hopefully [‘B.O.T.A.’] inspires other young women to get into electronic music and see it as a credible career, a space that they have access to. I want it to be more accessible and more mainstream,” adding, “Maybe we’ll get the next Calvin Harris.”
