Club kids around the world were sent into a state of collective panic today following reports of rumours that Berghain will be closing its doors for good. These rumours began circulating recently, following the iconic Berlin nightlife establishment’s closure of its in-house agency, Ostgut Booking. Their label Ostgut Ton, meanwhile, ceased operations last December. While nothing official has been announced, Faze magazine reports that the club, which has been operating since 2004, is nearing its “final end” and that the closure of Ostgut Ton is the beginning of the end.
According to German blog Faze, several insiders have alluded to the club’s closure at the end of this year. “One of the founders has already been paid out and is said to be staying in the countryside in Brandenburg,” one source said. “The others simply ‘don’t feel like it’ anymore and have other life plans in mind.” Apparently, there are no plans to sell the venue or pass the Berghain legacy on either. “This is not desirable,” the source continued. Other reasons for the rumoured closure include the soaring energy prices in Europe and the cost of keeping the venue running through the winter season.
It should be noted that this is not the first time rumours regarding Berghain’s imminent demise have been rampant. The club has been the subject of multiple speculations that it is nearing the end of its almost 18 year run over the years, most recently whispers that Berghain would not reopen following the Covid-19 lockdown. Berlin DJ and co-founder of award winning club night Brenn, Flemish Fetish reassured us that rumours of this nature are common occurrences on the scene, and usually don’t add up to much. “Every time these rumours come out about things closing from insiders, the ‘insiders’ turn around and say the information was incorrect,” he said. His advice to the scores of techno heads and club freaks currently hyperventilating? “Don’t stress about it, bitch.”
