Nakhane – My Ma Was Good
The latest single from Nakhane’s upcoming EP, Leading Lines, continues their exploration into electronica. This time, they play with The Knife style synthpop on a track that sees Nakhane “toying with the villian” in themselves. The track’s breakdown to sparse, reverb laden drum kicks and kwaito whistles is a highlight, with Nakhane building the schema up again through a heartfelt piano refrain.
Floating Points – Someone Close
Compared to his previous two recent singles, Someone Close is a change of pace for British producer Floating Points. The track is borderline ambient, shaped from shimmering arpeggios and thrumming drones that emanate from the background. Someone Close is hypnotic, its magic intensifying as the whole thing builds toward a crescendo over its eight minutes.
Kelela – On The Run
Taken from her forthcoming sophomore album Raven, Kelela’s On The Run is a sensual future R&B track that builds itself around an ambient backbone. Drone synths and field recordings of motorbikes speeding off colour a languid hip-hop beat, while Kelela’s breathless voice carries On The Run to steamier places.
Jayda G, Taylor Swift – Anti-Hero (Jayda G Remix)
This one is kind of unexpected. House queen Jayda G spins Swift’s longest running number one hit into a breezy house jam, looping Swift’s “it’s me, hi” hook and building a summer ready piano house groove around her vocals.
