Having coined the term ethnic-electronica, producer Deep Forest uses music to bottle the regional tones of cultures from around the globe. With an ear for a diverse range of tones, he has distilled cultural music in projects like Deep Brasil, Deep Africa, and Deep India, wherein he summarises his musical identity and captures the geography of sound. Beginning as a duo, Deep Forest’s unique style had them rise to prominence in the early ‘90s when their single ‘Sweet Lullaby’ was nominated for a GRAMMY award.
Scheduled to perform at THE PLAYGROUND’s debut TIMELESS Festival in 2023, we asked him about his musical journey and more:

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?
I’ve been a musician from my 14th. As far as I remember, I’ve always composed, so for me, it’s a natural way to communicate.
Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?
The idea.
What’s on your current playlist?
I like to discover unknown music so I can let a playlist guide me to another one and so on. The problem with that process is that I don’t remember the name of the artists…
Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.
Playing live is always a new adventure as I like to improvise a lot. I try to tell a musical story to the audience.
How are you prepping for your set at TIMELESS fest?
I have never been to South Africa, so I’m very impatient to discover it.
Which of your songs should festival-goers put on their ‘TIMELESS’ playlist?
Probably ‘Sweet Lullaby’. There are so many versions and remixes.
With so many exciting acts performing at TIMELESS festival, who are you most excited to see?
I really like Sainte Vie. I hope I can meet and discuss with him.
What one thing MUST you absolutely have with you on stage?
My keyboards.
Break down the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?
I will play new material from the new album (spring 2023) and of course a lot of iconic Deep Forest songs.
