Debby Friday’s debut album, GOOD LUCK, is a genre-fluid, experimental body of work that showcases the Nigerian-born, Montreal-raised artist’s personal growth and emotional depth. The album centres around Friday’s journey from the hedonistic rave scene to sobriety, a journey that is reflected in the album’s duelling themes of love and longing, perseverance and grace, and life and death. Friday has been one of the more intriguing talents to emerge over the past few years, and her debut plunges deeper into the abrasive arthouse abstraction that has become her signature style.
Produced in collaboration with Holy Fuck’s Graham Walsh, GOOD LUCK opens with the adrenaline-pumping title track, with its fiery bass and electro-shock blasts that kick the album into high gear. HOT LOVE follows, a dizzying and combustible depiction of love’s karmic entanglements. There’s lashings of Alice Glass electropunk, and Fever Ray outsider melodies. I GOT IT featuring Uñas, is a cocky acid house party starter, while HEARTBREAKERRR drips with salacious heat and X-rated innuendos.
The album’s standout track, WHAT A MAN, casts an ominous backdrop for Friday’s stentorian wail as she winds potent imagery through traditional-sounding rhyme structures. On LET U DOWN, Friday’s admissions are more gripping against an unsettled atmosphere that gives weight to tales of a sinner’s life. Throughout the album, Friday imbues her music with tension-based dynamics and emotionally driven drama.

In her long-term study of philosophy, psychology, and astrology, Friday seeks to “be in dialogue with the darkness.” The album reflects this ambition, with tracks such as SO HARD TO TELL and SAFE exploring the depths of emotions and self-awareness. Friday’s clarity emerges in SAFE, a haunting and mournful track that showcases her complex yet troubled voice of reason.
GOOD LUCK is a wild and wonderful homage to Friday’s past, holding space for her lost and confused youth while simultaneously exorcising those experiences. Though at times erratic and muddled in its execution, with its standout songwriting and bold production choices, the album’s fearlessness feels nomadically spirited and earned.
