Goldenvoice, the organisers of Coachella, have been fined $117,000 (£94,071) for breaching curfew rules each night during the first weekend of the festival.
Coachella signed an agreement with the city of Indio in 2013 which included a curfew policy of midnight for Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 PM for Sundays. However, the festival went over its curfew by approximately 20 minutes each night.
The agreement states that running five minutes past the curfew results in a $20,000 fine, with each additional minute incurring an extra $1,000 charge. The fines are used to support the city’s operating costs, police and fire departments, and public works. The agreement also restricts under-18s from loitering in certain areas between 10 PM and 5 AM.
Frank Ocean performed at Coachella for the first time in six years but had to end his set early due to the midnight curfew. The artist began an hour late, and the performance exceeded the allotted time, leading to the disappointment of fans.
Despite the fine, the festival will continue with its second weekend featuring headliners Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, and Frank Ocean.
