Since her now iconic EDC DJ set, fans of Canadian pop star Grimes have been clamoring for an official release of her epic opening track Welcome To The Opera. The collaboration with producer Anyma was initially assumed to be part of her long announced and since forgotten Book 1 project, which in Grime’s own words, is a ‘space opera about a sentient lesbian AI.” Though Book 1 has been placed on ice indefinitely, some of its tracks have found their way into the world, from Player Of Games to Shinigami Eyes. Welcome To The Opera is finally having its moment, officially released by Anyma as the first single off his upcoming debut album.
A quick paced and grandiose trance banger, Welcome To The Opera’s distinctive electric harpsichord riff adds a breathtaking drama to the whole experience. Welcome To The Opera arrives mostly intact from its first iteration, though the track doesn’t really go anywhere new. Presumably repurposed from Grimes to Anyma, Welcome to The Opera features the previously heard verse and refrain from Grimes’ EDC set, with an extended intro and outro section.

The charm of Welcome to The Opera’s demo version lay in how it masterfully created peaks and valleys through silence and pause. That’s gone here, with a ceaseless bass throb pulsating throughout. While it sews the parts of the track together quite nicely, it also muddies its most impactful moments, such as the post-drop synths which have gone from a mind-bending rudder to more of an accent. While it’s a striking lead for Anyma’s debut, fans of Grimes will likely be left wanting more from her and frustrated at Welcome To The Opera’s pivot away from its poppier first iteration.
