Back in 2005, the year Alan Braxe unleashed the French touch classic, The Upper Cuts, he decided to crank up the awesomeness even more by remixing Annie’s seminal banger, Heartbeat. Fast forward eighteen years, and these two musical geniuses have teamed up once again for the upcoming reissue of The Upper Cuts. Their latest joint single, Never Coming Back, is a fluffy disco jam that also packs a pretty punch. Picture Annie sashaying like a total boss while this groovy guitar riff seduces you to keep up with her. But don’t get too close, my friend. If the Annie we’re most used to is the hopeless romantic, on Never Coming Back, she’s all glamour and vampy enigma. With her voice tweaked by a vocoder, she mocks some lovesick fool, “everybody needs somebody, and yeah, I need somebody too. But definitely not you-u-u.” In this sense, Never Coming Back is a bit of a paradox. The track pulls you in with its irresistible vibe, but at the same time, it’s as icy as the North Pole. It’s an unmistakable final farewell, wrapped up in a groove that’s so timeless it could play until the end of freaking time itself.
