Anthony Naples is one of those instinctual producers who seems to master any style that might appeal to his creativity. In 2021, he released an album of shoegaze inspired ambient and then another of club ready bass and techno just months apart. Last year saw him join forces with DJ Python to add a house music sensibility to the latter’s ambient reggaeton, before dropping a hoover synth heavy deep house EP. But Naples has always flourished best in more ambiguous waters, where he’s able to exercise his skills as a sound designer. Unknown closes his latest album Orbs, a project that appeals to this part of him. Unbound by structure or stylistic constraints, Naples is free to create music that feels more like the manifestation of moods and textures.
There’s snatches of identifiable influences on Unknow. The delayed strum of an electric guitar, its warped, wormhole bass stemming from dub. Sparse, sluggish beats trip along, while the entire expanse of the track rotates in washes of spacey ambience. It’s a six and a half minute epic that reinforces Naples as one our most dexterous and technically skilled producers, an artist who is at his best when giving in to his sophisticated instincts.
