Black Coffee made history at the 2022 Grammy Awards last night after winning the Best Dance / Electronic Music Album category, becoming the first African DJ to win the category and the first African DJ to win a Grammy in history. Black Coffee won for his seventh studio album, Subconsciously which features artists including David Guetta and Pharell. The South African afrohouse DJ beat out fellow nominees Marshmellow and Major Lazer. Meanwhile, Australian trio Rüfüs Du Sol took home the award for Best Dance / Electronic Recording for their track Alive. They beat out big name competition including David Guetta, Afrojack, and Bonobo.
Other artists walking away with gold last night were Olivia Rodrigo, who won three of her seven nominations including the general field category of Best New Artist and Doja Cat who won her first Grammy with SZA for Best Pop Duo / Group Performance. Jon Batiste was the night’s biggest winner, with the musician’s album We Are taking home the evening’s top award for Album Of The Year. We Are also took home prizes in the Roots and Music Video categories, while Batiste also won in the Soundtrack category. The artist had a total of eleven nominations this year across a range of categories. After her near clean sweep in 2020, Billie Eilish left the Grammy’s empty handed this year. Silk Sonic meanwhile, walked away with Song and Record Of The Year trophies.
Black Coffee received his award during the televised pre-ceremony. The main ceremony was filled with performances from Rodrigo and Eilish, as well as BTS, Lady Gaga, Lil’ Nas X, and Nas amongst others. Interestingly, a number of performances from acts who had won Grammys during the pre-show were cut with multiple commercial breaks despite these being some of the most interesting of the night. The ceremony took place in Las Vegas for the first time at the MGM Grand. Watch a video of Black Coffee accepting his award below.
