Kawasaki Meets Glasgow in Chvrches new single featuring Wednesday Campanella.
Last week, iconic synth-pop group Chvrches unexpectedly released an upbeat new single titled ‘Out of My Head’, featuring successful J-pop trio Wednesday Campanella. Lead vocalist of Wednesday Campanella, Kom_I, described the collaboration as “Kawasaki meets Glasgow, Kiyoshiro Imawano meets David Bowie, and edamame meets fish & chips.” The release of this latest single follows on from Chvrches’ 2018 Japanese tour, which featured a huge show at Tokyo’s Fuji Rock festival, where the band played alongside massive names such as Vampire Weekend, Odesza and MGMT. The new track was also released with a colourful and galactic anime video by Japanese animator Junichi Yamamoto.
“Japan has always been a really special place for Chvrches,” Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry explained, “[Wednesday Campanella‘s] Kom_I has such a strong, individual voice in her music and how she conducts herself as a person — something that I really admire.” Kom_I’s really does make Chvrches new track extra special, and her powerful delivery of the Japanese consonants contrasts beautifully with Lauren Mayberry’s soaring English choruses. The stylistic mix fits flawlessly together, especially the poppy upbeat elements of J-pop that clearly support and enhance the bubbly classic synthpop elements.
