Experimental Electronic Musician Tim Hecker Announces New Album, Shares Single ‘This Life’

Written by Maya-Rose Torrão

Canadian-born experimental electronic lynchpin Tim Hecker has just shared a single from his latest upcoming album, titled ‘Konoyo’, which is due to be released via Kranky records on September 28. The majority of the album was recorded in Japan and is inspired by traditional Japanese gagaku music, pieces of which Hecker has included in the tracks, from his collaboration with gagaku ensemble Tokyo Gakuso. The title of the album is a Japanese word that means “the world over here”.

Hecker has just released his first single off the album, ‘This Life’, an enthralling eight minute long experimental piece that oozes synth and waves of spinning notes that confuse and inspire. The tracks from the album were recorded in a temple of the outskirts of Tokyo, lending the new material a serious but dreamy edge, and sound very different to Hecker’s earlier work. According to the press release, “both in texture and intent, ‘Konoyo’ conjures a somber, ceremonial mood, suffused with ritual and regret.”

The celebrated experimental musician has also announced a short series of shows that will take place in Japan and Europe, where he will be accompanied by Tokyo Gakuso and Canadian producer Kara-Lis Coverdale.
