When it comes to describing the nature of the house music that Fort Romeau is in the business of making, the word to use is, without a doubt, ‘romantic.’ Only this can describe his affinity for heartstring pulling, emotion stirring sonnets of club music painted in operatic chiaroscuro, swinging between euphoria and crippling melancholy. Last year’s Beings Of Lights, for instance, opened with the sound of rainfall, only to reveal an album otherwise jam packed with summer-ready house.

His latest single Be With U is perhaps one of his most outwardly romantic. Oscillating drones spin and cavort together in space, chime-like and crystalline, above a softly pulsing four on the floor that bursts into the foreground. A simple vocal refrain, ‘where I can’t be with you,’ comes in, looping over as backbeats flourish. Later, horns arise from the depths, an unexpected symphony of brass that’s full of forlorn and longing. This is a track that wears its heart on its sleeve, toeing the line between heartfelt and sentimental with just enough earnestness that it comes off as the former. A big reason for this is its mammoth runtime. At just over nine minutes, Be With U is given plenty of room to phase in and out of its emotional beats quite naturally. Nothing feels forced or rushed, and together the whole thing reads like poetry.
