How To Dress Well announces new album, ‘The Anteroom’, shares new single and video

Written by Maya-Rose Torrão

The musician behind the experimental electronic music project How To Dress Well, Tom Krell, has just announced his fifth album under this moniker, a techno-inspired psychedelic musical journey titled ‘The Anteroom’. Along with this announcement, How To Dress Well has also just shared a new single from the album, as well as the video for the track, titled ‘Nonkilling 6 | Hunger’.

The video for the latest single is a collaboration between Tom Krell and visual artist Justin Daashuur Hopkins and features Krell thrashing wildly in a darkened industrial space, with fluorescent light projections flashing across his bare chest. This scene also interchanges with pixelated digital art made up of black and white forms that glitch across the screen and Krell’s body covered crudely in grey clay; all-in-all a video that makes for a raw and emotional watch that only enhances the dark edge of ‘Nonkilling 6 | Hunger’. The song itself opens with a distorted stanza from the poet Li Young-Lee that twists and morphs into Krell’s empathic, fragile lyrics which sit precariously atop frantic tech-house beats.

On the new album, Krell muses, “’The Anteroom’ is testament to a two year period in which I felt myself slipping out of the world and into a cosmic loneliness in which I would eventually be dissolved. In order to give myself a way back, I began to try to understand my station as some kind of anteroom — a space between — a chamber that separates the known and the unknown, stable life from total disintegration.”

‘The Anteroom’ is out October 19 on Domino, which you can pre-order here.
