Jessy Lanza – Limbo

With her previous two recent singles, Canadian producer Jessy Lanza has slowly been embracing a poppier sound that emphasizes a facet to Lanza that’s always been there. Beneath the squiggly synths and lo-fi beats, she has always had an ear for a hook, and her upcoming album Love Hallucination seems to be the project on which she hones in on this instinct.

Limbo is the latest single to be shared from the album, and is one of Lanza’s most lyrically driven works to date. An effervescent synthpop romp, Limbo puts Lanza’s voice into focus against disco adjacent percussion and rubbery, retro synths. She puts the tried and true pop trope of spelling out the track’s title to good use as she laments a state of indecision, stuck in limbo as she questions whether to stay or to go. It’s far lighter than the bass heavy house of Don’t Leave Me Now or the late night garage of Midnight Ontario, with German DJ and producer Tensnake adding his unmistakable nu-disco euphoria into the mix.
