Last month, we were treated to the unexpected return of Joy Overmono, the joint project between British post-dubstep, underground UKG icons Joy Orbison and Overmono. While this second coming gave us another opportunity to lament over their moniker’s missed opportunity (OverJoyo was literally right there), it also provided us with Blind Date, one of the most balls-to-the-wall cuts from either act in a while. This was particularly true for Orbison, who until that point, we had last encountered within the moody breakbeats of his debut LP, still slipping vol.1, and once off singles like pinky ring which followed that album’s aesthetic template.
Cue 2M3 2U. Orbison has unleashed a certified bass banger upon the world out of nowhere once again, and this one is an absolute rager. Sitting somewhere between bass, minimal techno, and garage, 2M3 2U adds a touch of house as it works toward its ultimate goal: DANCE! Working along a propulsive techno thud, Orbison layers UKG leaning vocal samples and squabbling, high-voltage arpeggios that buzz like the fiery blue tendrils of a Tesla Coil. This thing goes off, and 2M3 2U doesn’t waste any time getting there, either. Orbison drops us firmly in media res, his beat commanding your attention from the first, satisfyingly deep, pulse.
