Within a fairly short span of time, Berlin-via-New York techno / ghetto tech artist LSDXOXO has risen to underground icon status. While his last EP, Dedicated 2 Disrespect, might have been a breakthrough of sorts, it happened to come at a pivotal moment in his career when he began flirting with his interests outside of techno. As such, his debut album is shaping up to be a 180 from his established sound. First single DRaiN hinted toward the influence of grunge and pop-punk, his emo sensibilities coming to the fore through its forlorn and desperate melody.
Demons, the second single off the forthcoming album, continues to hint toward this alt-rock influence. Against crunched out, whiplash breakbeats, LSDXOXO fully indulges his emo rock inclinations. His drone-like, doldrum vocals are layered one atop the other for added despair, while collaborator EARTHEATER swoops in with an airy, almost medicated delivery. The most fascinating part of Demons, as with DRaiN, is how it manages to traverse the boundaries of genre almost entirely. Its breakneck electronic beats make perfect sense, so much so that you could almost hear Dashboard Confessional performing the track as is without it sounding out of canon.

While this new direction may be a jarring left turn in the scope of LSDXOXO’s current discography, it makes sense. He’s always worn his alternative influences on his sleeve, and it’s thoroughly exciting to see him begin bringing it into his sound.
