A photographer and a signee of the independent, Deep House record label AnjunaDeep, Lycoriscoris is a multitalented creative who dabbles in an array of genres and art forms. Most recently, he released an album, Sketches From Memory. The 10-track LP falls within the scope of the Ambient genre with soundscapes that embody the calming effects of a stroll through nature. To this end, he says, “I wanted to create an album that is as tranquil as the sounds of nature and can be listened to like air.” It is as if each record on the LP was named after a polaroid picture of a landscape.
With peace in mind, Lycoriscoris had a definite intent for his album. “For this project, I tried to use only the minimum necessary sounds that would not disturb the listener’s daily life. I carefully translated each of the scenes I saw in my life into sound, eliminating as many unnecessary sounds as possible, and the result is very simple music,” he says, deconstructing a bit of his process. The outcome is akin to the atmospheric works of Jon Hopkins and the tonal qualities that Brian Eno plays with.

Beginning the album and the day, ‘Morning Light’ casts bright beams of warm swells that reverberate into nothingness. Still foggy from sleep, the track crackles pleasantly, warming up as it shuffles toward its gentle end. Somewhat more corrosive, ‘We Are Still Alone’ is tormented. It feels barren like the arid Sahara desert. Wind chimes, presumably, twinkle in the wind. It’s enthralling. ‘For This Moment’ is distant, detached even. Drones are caught in limbo. They are filtered in such a way that they withdraw beyond reach: the harder you listen, the further they fade.
