It’s no secret that Peggy Gou is a dedicated student of the 90’s. The DJ and producer has always flirted with distinctly 90’s motifs in her work, finding her sound in the lofi bass and shimmery synths of the era’s classic house cuts. On her latest single (It Goes Like) Nanana, she delves even further, offering a (sort of trashy) summer ready anthem that feels as if it stepped right out of a Delorean from 1998.
Finding itself in the pages of the Baeleric house playbook, (It Goes Like) Nanana is glaringly formulaic. The twang of its pitched down guitar synth owes much to ATB,while the lead hook is very A Touch Of Class. But then, that’s the whole point. As its poppy cover art suggests, (It Goes Like) Nanana is a shameless, albeit well played, homage to her favorite decade. It also pushes Gou ever so slightly toward new sonic territory with its Eurodance vibe and trance chords. This is Gou doing what she does best: applying tried and true dance pop formulas to stunning effect, and the result is a breezy yet banging dance floor anthem that’s a shoe in for song of the summer.
