[PREMIERE & INTERVIEW] iSorin – Laminar Flow

Hot on the heels of his debut EP Through The Forcefield, iSorin has dropped ‘Laminar Flow’, which The Playground is happy to have premiered on the 23rd of May. Highlights of the track include its simmering bassline and the vocal chops leaking through the layers of rich synth sounds soaring over it all.

Closing in on two decades of producing, iSorin seems determined to continue expanding on his creative process and output. Be sure to keep up.

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?

Yo! Done with work and now I get to relax

Tell us about your journey in music, how long have you been producing? What inspired you to start?

I’ve been producing for 15 years now. I was at a friend’s house in high school and he had this program called “Fruity Loops 4” (which is now FL Studio). We made some TERRIBLE sounding stuff, but it was a lot of fun and hilarious, so I didn’t take it very seriously at first. Then I downloaded the program for myself and it came with a bunch of projects from professional producers, which actually opened my eyes to the true capabilities of the program. I was super into trance (still am), and always loved hip hop beats, so I produced that for a while…it was not great lol. Then around 2006 one of my friends showed me some songs from Skream and Burial, and this was my first real introduction to bass music. At this point my mindset shifted and I tried many times to make some dubstep songs but they always sounded terrible to me so I never released anything.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

I would say the main component of my music is that it is very melodic. Combine that with trance and hip hop/trap influences, and throw in a bumpin’ bassline and you basically have iSorin 😀

Where do you gather songwriting inspiration?

Almost anything can inspire me, but it’s usually after listening to any music that I’m really feelin’. I’ll hear a song and hear background melodies that aren’t really in the track, and start a project with those melodies and go from there while trying extra hard to not sound like I’m copying the track.
Sometimes a random melody will randomly pop in my head while driving, and I have to drive home in silence thinking of the melody until I get home so I can lay it down in FL Studio lol.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies you.

So you already know I use FL Studio as my DAW. My main synths I use are Serum, Massive, and Sylenth. For speakers I use JBL LSR305 Studio Monitors with matching sub, but I’m saving up for some ADAMs!

What kind of relationship do you have with the internet? How does this inform your artistic expression?

I spend quite a bit of time on the internet when I’m not working, so I’m quite influenced by the happenings on the interwebs lol. Sometimes it’s a love/hate relationship, cuz as much as memes are fun, there’s plenty of hate out there as well, so I do my best to stay off negative social media. But the internet is also where I find all of my new music….so not sure how my sound would be shaped without it!

Which other artists are you into at the moment and why?

I’m heavily influenced by some key innovators in the wave scene, such as: NOAH B, Skeler, Sorsari, Juche, and Deadcrow. These artists have so many tracks that I keep coming back to and consistently put out quality music with a distinctive sound. So this upper echelon will most likely never change for me. BUT, there are PLENTY of other artists out there that I’m really into, which include Enjoii, Gloomy, Tigereyes, Outsidr, Ennja, and for my trance fix I always turn to Naden. So many other artists I enjoy but can’t name off everyone ☹

Who would be your dream collaborator?

Any one of those top 5 artists I named earlier would be a dream (a few of them are getting close to becoming reality ), but if I got a chance to work with Naden, who is a trance artist, that would be crazy. That guy makes some of the most beautiful complex melodies and they just speak directly to my soul.

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

Well, if you haven’t checked out my first ever EP (Through the Forcefield EP, released on vibe.digital June 2019), please give it a listen! I also have a brand new track coming out on the Liquid Ritual Volume II Compilation, and that is coming May 29th, 2019. So many amazing tracks coming on that compilation from so many amazing artists, so don’t miss it!!!!!

Famous last words?

Stay true to yourself, don’t sell out, and don’t be a dick!

Thanks for having me!
