Q+A: 5 minutes with Landikhan

A stalwart of Madrid’s vibrant club scene, Spanish DJ and producer Landikhan has established himself as one of the most authentic electronic artists on the circuit, presenting a sound palette that’s as diversely pleasing as it is refined. A staunch contributor to the house and electronica scape for many years now, Landikhan’s output made a significant shift after an epiphany at Ibiza’s storied WooMooN, moving towards a more spiritually-driven sound that champions deep breaks and ethnic tones. From that moment on, Landikhan’s unique positioning within electronic music was clear and he has since reached the full essence of his sound, bringing with it a host of new fans.  Boasting well over 6 million streams and 90,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone, it’s no surprise he was named Best Spanish-Speaking Electronica Artist by Vicious Magazine. Kicking off the year with a stream of releases for Earthly Delights and O’Tawa Records – as well as for his own LNDKHN imprint – the established talent now joins Kontrapost for the release of Antaares’ Voy a Volver EP, delivering a Slow Trance Remix for the extended player’s lead single. We caught up with the man himself to find out more.

Hi Landikhan, thanks for your time. Set the tone for us. Why music?

Because music is a universal language, another way to express feelings and moods. Music reaches places where words cannot.

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

Always the idea, always inspiration depending on the music I’m listening to. I listen to music 24 hours a day and always, when I’m walking down the street, when I’m on the subway… I’m always alert to things that can inspire me for a future track.

What is your favourite track that you have ever made, and why?

For me one of my favourite tracks is Landikhan – A Fuego. Perhaps it is one of my lesser known tracks, the rhythm breaks using some elements of Spanish Folklore such as flamenco tambourines and yes…the voices are mine.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

I always work at FBT studio in Madrid, owned by Ed is Dead and Octopvs to the Party.

The first thing I do is buy a coffee and I come from home with clear ideas; where I want the track to go and what I want to express in it.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

Cubase as DAW, Focal speakers, Aurora sound card.

At FBT studio they have an incredible collection of synthesizers like Maxibrute, Ms2000, Minilogue to name a few.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

I was a tennis coach and at first I combined my work as a coach with music. About ten years ago I went to play at an event at Space Ibiza during the Easter holidays for a student event. When I saw the terrace of Space completely full of people and the public vibrating with my music, I realized that this was the place where I wanted to be.

What’s on your current playlist?

Moderat, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Burial, Rival Consoles.

Any emerging artists on your radar?

Genish, Argia, Dpaz…

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

A lot of new music that will be released in 2023, a very special collaboration with my friend Ed is Dead that will be released in May, and some different remixes.Playing, I can be seen in places like Ibiza, Mykonos, Tirana, Madrid and Turkey.

Famous last words?

Always do what you feel.
