Q&A with the elusive electronic producer, SUBFICTION

We sat down with the veiled Dutch producer SUBFICTION, who unveiled a new single, ‘we_glitch’, on April 26th, 2024 via On Track / SUBFICTION. ‘we_glitch’, which premiered via Electronic Groove, is an appetiser for his forthcoming EP of the same name, slated for release in May 2024. Since the project’s inception in 2022, the year in which he notably played an official after-show for Ross From Friends, the elusive SUBFICTION has been making waves in the music industry with no signs of slowing down. He has toured the Netherlands alongside De Likt and legendary travelling festival The Popronde as 3voor12 talent, and performed at festivals like Grasnapolsky, Motel Mozaïque and Eendracht Festival, as well as many underground clubs. In 2023, SUBFICTION hosted a festival stage together with Irish DJ/producer Kessler’s new label Elicit Records. Unstoppable, in January 2024 the elusive maestro participated in Eurosonic Noorderslag and was awarded the number 12 of best acts by 3voor12. Influenced by experimental electronic luminaries like Aphex Twin and Overmono, his sound is sure to be enjoyed by fans of the aforementioned as well as those of Four Tet, Bicep and Fred Again

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. Creativity is intelligence and having fun. I tend to disrupt both.

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

The atmosphere defines the environment of sound. When the mood is good, the ideas will flow.

Does your material feature any collaborations?

No.

What’s on your current playlist?

Joy Orbison’s ‘Flight FM’, Underworld’s ‘Cups’ and James Blake’s new album.

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

Anonymity extracts dancing. My veiled appearance and interactive visual are bridging my music with the audience.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

Extreme overdosing distortion, glitch everything up and connect with the unexpected.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

Starting off with ironing of the veils, then a full body drumcomputer workout and afterward an analog synth.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

Dekmantel –> Coachella –> Collab with hologram of The Beatles.

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

The glitch is where the heart is.

Any emerging artists on your radar?

Nikos, Jopie Leaks, Dirty DM’s and Avvnt MM.

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Pigeon-like dance moves.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

I’m working on a software bridge between Unreal Engine (Game software) and Ableton to manipulate virtual 3D worlds with musical instruments in real time. For example, A reverb effect simultaneously controls the weather in a forest game setting.

Any side projects you’re working on?

Collecting gemstones, a course of drone piloting and space jam basketball.

How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?

You play like you practise and practise how you play.

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

My debut album ENTER will appear this year.

Famous last words?

Don’t be a person, be yourself.
