Techno icon and producer Richie Hawtin has launched a scholarship in electronic music at The University of Huddersfield. The programme, officially titled The Richie Hawtin PhD Scholarship in Electronic Music, Cultures and Production, will see the successful application receive tutoring from Hawtin himself, and the scholarship awarded in Hawtin’s name.
Hawtin has an ongoing relationship with the University. In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from The University of Huddersfield to honour his outstanding contributions to music technology, leading a masterclass on his one-of-a-kind Model One mixer at the institution a year later.
“Richie has set up his own labels; technology companies; an investment fund; a sake brand; has run a residency in Ibiza; and written many genre-defining albums. This is a wonderful opportunity to tap into his knowledge and experience,” said Prof. Rupert Till of the University’s Department of Music and Design Arts. “There is huge scope for research within this PhD,” he continued, “It could be anything within music such as electronic music, dance music, club music, DJ culture or even around composition or analysis.”
Applications for the scholarship are open until February 10th, with the course commencing this September. Interested parties can apply here.
