Collaborating with producers Fred again.. and Stuart Price, as well as her bandmate Jamie xx, Romy’s upcoming album Mid Air looks to be a window into her journey toward love, intimacy, and acceptance. Finding solace on the dance floor, the album delves into themes of love, grief, relationships, identity, and sexuality, serving as a heartfelt tribute to the queer clubs where Romy discovered a sense of community and connection.
Her latest single, Loveher, sets the tone for this. As the album’s opening statement, Loveher is a pivotal track produced by Fred again.. as the first composition created for Mid Air. A tender house ballad, Loveher trickles over subdued beats and careful piano chords, taking shape as a declarative pop anthem celebrating the intimacy of falling in love with a woman. Romy and Fred were initially paired to write songs for other artists, but their immediate bond and musical synergy sparked something new. As they worked on Loveher, Romy recalls Fred’s question, “Who could this be for?” and her hesitant response, “Maybe me?” This proud and positive portrayal of a queer love story became the foundation of Mid Air, with Romy embarking on a remarkable musical journey.
