Kelly Lee Owens – Sonic 8
On 2018’s Inner Song, Welch DJ and musician Kelly Lee Owens straddled her work as techno DJ and pop writer on an album that intertwined both of these sides to brilliant effect. Her upcoming album LP.8, looks to offer a different side of Owens. Recorded in Oslo with avant-garde sound artist Lasse Marhaug, LP.8 has been envisioned “as in between Throbbing Gristle and Enya.” Sonic 8 is a buzzing industrial track with bursts of static, and Owen’s forming an ethereal pattern of breathing beneath the electronics, while reciting a spoken word bit over the top.
Soulwax, Peggy Gou – I Go (Soulwax Remix)
Last year saw Peggy Gou drop I Go, a hooky 90’s dance inspired record pulsing with 808’s and synth stabs. Her recently released EP of I Go remixes features this gem from Soulwax, who intensify the track’s inherent 90’s house energy, adding a loon call and an analog synth breakdown that surges with an infectious energy, proving once again that they are the undisputed masters of the remix.
Sofi Tukker – KAKEE
Off of their upcoming album Wet Tennis (yes), KAKEE is the new single from jungle house duo and viral streaming sensation Sofi Tukker. Following the first two singles, the mellow bass-house track Original Sin and the emotive, string accented latin groove of Forgive Me, KAKEE pivots Sofi Tukker back to the wild, propulsive party starters they are best known for. Until this point it was unclear if Wet Tennis was a total departure for the duo toward more downtempo and overwrought EDM. But with its obnoxious fender twangs, Miami bounce beat, Sophie’s mumbled Portuguese and Tucker’s terminator voice, KAKEE assures us that Sofi Tukker is still very much here to party and play.
Perel, Marie Davidson – Jesus Was An Alien (Club Edit)
Sci-fi gospel with an Italo disco streak? We’re sold. Perel’s latest is the title track of her upcoming album which “is a discourse about whether Jesus was an actual alien, but also a social debate about what is and implies religion today.” Crooned by Marie Davidson in French, this delightfully absurd genuflection in an interstellar oddity that looks to reimagine Christ on the dancefloor.
Confidence Man – Break It Bought It
Australia has consistently given rise to formidable tastemakers in dance music, from PNAU to Rufus Du Sol. Confidence Man, the Brisbane based house and club music quartet, occupy a space that’s somewhere in-between the camp of the Scissor Sisters and the acid of CamelPhat. Taken off their new album Tilt, Break It Bought It is a tongue in cheek house anthem featuring an attitude soaked spoken word bit about femme empowerment. Glittery, witty, and effervescent, this one has a place at the ball.
