Sweden’s Loreen makes history with second Eurovision win

Loreen, representing Sweden, has made history by winning the Eurovision Song Contest for a second time at a spectacular event held in Liverpool, UK, on behalf of last year’s winners and rightful host country, Ukraine. She became only the second performer to achieve this feat, securing her victory with the pop ballad Tattoo and solidifying her status in the renowned music competition.

Loreen had previously emerged victorious in 2012 with her career-defining hit Euphoria in Baku. This latest win brings Sweden level with Ireland for the most victories in the contest, both countries having won seven times. Remarkably, it coincides with the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s triumph with Waterloo, which catapulted them to superstardom.

After a gap of more than two decades, the United Kingdom took on the hosting duties, having secured second place in the previous year’s competition. The show aimed to create a collaborative atmosphere between the UK and Ukraine, paying tribute to those affected by war and showcasing the music of both nations. However, organisers revealed that a request from President Volodymyr Zelensky to address the show was declined due to Eurovision’s strict ‘nonpolitical’ stance.

Loreen expressed her gratitude and joy following the announcement of her victory, stating, “This is so surreal, man. I’m happy and I’m thankful, I’m thankful to all you guys out there that voted for me.” She described the Eurovision community as a safe and welcoming space, emphasising the significance of her initial win in 2012.

Notably, Loreen became the first woman to achieve a double win in the contest, a distinction previously held only by Ireland’s Johnny Logan. The top five of the competition featured strong performances from Finland’s rapper Käärijä, as well as acts from Israel, Italy, and Norway.
