It’s no secret that London producer SONIKKU is a total pop nerd. In fact, of all his peers in the current bubblegum bass / hyperpop sphere, he may be the most enthusiastic student. This love for the genre has allowed SONIKKU to develop a sense for hooks and aesthetic, though his production prowess has always felt a step behind his otherwise grand ideas. However, over the past few years he’s taken the time to evolve his sound and technical abilities, which is how we arrive at this point after beginning with Madonna bootlegs and sweaty bubblegum loops. It’s possible that his remix of New York singer-songwriter TAMA GUCCI’s desperately romantic Show Me may be his best work to date.

Taken from TAMA GUCCI’s upcoming deluxe re-issue of his Almost Blue EP, SONIKKU completely revamps Show Me, starting foremost with TAMA GUCCI’s voice. Pitched down a few octaves, TAMA GUCCI’s forlorn delivery is equipped to hold its own against SONIKKU’s pulse quickening eurodance and hi-NRG direction. The producer replaces Show Me’s original jungle breaks with a throbbing bassline and laser-like synth riff upwards of 128BPM, while looking toward the twinkling chimes of the original intro to build a saccharine casing around his dancefloor confection. But the masterstroke lies in SONIKKU’s ability to retain the integrity of Show Me’s emotional core and queer romanticism. TAMA GUCCI’s breathless “would you die for me” is as affecting as ever, even at the centre of a rave maelstrom, and this speaks toward SONIKKU’s unparalleled understanding of the mechanics of pop music itself.
