The Blessed Madonna – Serotonin Moonbeams

Marea Stamper has had an interesting two years. Following an online petition in the wake of the BLM movement in 2020, the American DJ and producer formerly known as The Black Madonna was compelled to change her name to The Blessed Madonna. Then, she remixed Dua Lipa’s seminal Future Nostalgia into a continuous club mix in her pyjamas over the course of lockdown. Then, she became the subject of arguably the anthem of lockdown, Marea… We’ve Lost Dancing. In fact, The Blessed Madonna has been so present in the current discourse that it’s easy to forget her last bit of solo material came out half a decade ago, the year after Mixmag named her the number one DJ in the world for a hot minute in 2016. Needless to say, it’s been a rollercoaster for Stamper, who’s been open about the toll her sudden peak in popularity has taken on her mental health. Her refuge, as always, has been the dancefloor. It’s fitting then that The Blessed Madonna the producer should reappear at this moment, as dancefloors and festivals across the world resume regular programming.

As its title might suggest, Serotonin Moonbeams, her first single at her new label Warner, is a cozy bit of after hours euphoria. It’s back to basics piano house, built around a looped piano riff and three chord whistle refrain which ooze along a steady four on the floor. It wouldn’t be Stamper without a dose of pop, and Serotonin Moonbeams delivers with its hooky speak-sung vocals, punched out by Uffie over Stamper’s effervescent discotheque diorama. Citing Vix VaporRub and the “candy soaked raves of the 90’s” as inspiration, Stamper says of the track, “It’s about “cuddle puddles” and the intense emotional, physical and spiritual connections that can form when serotonal conditions are right.” If that doesn’t give you enough context on what this track is really about, the album art featuring a girl hugging a speaker at the rave just might.
