The Weeknd, Oneohtrix Point Never – Dawn FM (Oneohtrix Point Never Remix)

Oneohtrix Point Never has largely been one of the most essential ghosts in the machine of The Weeknd. The American producer, best known for his genre bending experimental electronica, arguably shaped the direction of The Weeknd’s seminal album After Hours, and is even more paramount to its follow up, Dawn FM. Bringing his electronic futurism to The Weeknd’s retro sensibilities, he’s responsible for some of the album’s most beguiling moments, including songs Gasoline and Out Of Time, but also the album’s masterful interludes.

On Dawn FM, interludes are essential to the experience itself. They were not so much bookending introductions and conclusions, but rather self-contained dioramas responsible for building the imagined world of Dawn FM. It makes sense that OPN should revisit one of these interludes and expand on them, in particular the album’s titular track. For his remix, OPN pushes the introduction further into Dawn FM’s retro uncanniness, stretching the short intro into an extended, 80’s tinged synthwave odyssey. His pointillism-like synth work creates a cosmic landscape within which layers of melody and harmonies swirl, the voice of The Weeknd almost hymnal amongst OPN’s stars. It’s completely spacey, fantastical and full of drama; a worthy extension to the Dawn FM universe.
