When speaking with DJ Lag about the creation of Meeting With The King, the Durban born innovator and gqom pioneer agrees that thought went into the way the album flows. “Like a DJ set,” he offers. It starts unexpectedly, with smooth high life and afrohouse, sounds typically outside of Lag’s usual ‘uthayela’ scope. But it’s all part of the overall vision; crafting a fully realised experience that sweeps you up in it and throws you through a vortex of ever evolving energy. Going into the second half of Lag’s track-by-track walk through the album with us, it becomes increasingly clear that he is an artist unafraid to challenge himself and the expectations placed on him.
